Canada is a country in North America consisting of ten provinces and three territories. Located in the northern part of the continent, it extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean. At 9.98 million square kilometres in total, Canada is the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area.

Its common border with the United States forms the world's longest land border. The land that is now Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French colonies were established on the region's Atlantic coast.

Canada is a federal parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II being the current head of state. Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The country is officially bilingual at the federal level.

It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries, with a population of approximately 35 million as of December 2012. Its advanced economy is one of the largest in the world, relying chiefly upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed trade networks. Canada's long and complex relationship with the United States has had a significant impact on its economy and culture.

Loblaws is a supermarket chain with over 2,000 stores in Canada, headquartered in Brampton, with stores across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Loblaws is a division of Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada's largest food distributor. Founded by Theodore Loblaw, Loblaws stores used to operate across Canada until the early 1960s, when most locations in western Canada were re-branded as SuperValu, and later as Real Canadian Superstore. The company also once operated stores in upstate New York and northwest Pennsylvania.

These were sold to Bells Markets in the mid-1970s. Some of the Loblaws stores in northwestern Pennsylvania continued operation into the early 1990s. Actor William Shatner did a number of television commercials for Loblaws in the 1970s, and finished the ad spots by saying originally, "At Loblaws, more than the price is right; but, by gosh the price is right!" later shortened to, "At Loblaws, more than the price is right." Beginning in 2008, some new and renovated Loblaws stores were given a new store format and were named Loblaw Great Food, dropping the red-orange curved-L logo.

Stores under this banner are also subject to slightly different collective-agreement terms with the United Food and Commercial Workers, the union representing Loblaw employees. The chain's location on the site of the former Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, opened in late 2011, is promoted as simply Loblaws and uses the familiar "L" logo, but is officially named "Loblaws Great Food", indicating that similar terms are in place at that store. On July 19, 2013, Loblaws introduced their new concept "Loblaws CityMarket" in North Vancouver, BC. Loblaws CityMarkets are now also operational in Ontario and Quebec.

No Frills (corporately styled nofrills) is a chain of deep discount supermarkets in Canada, owned by Loblaw Companies Limited, a subsidiary of George Weston Limited. There are over 200 franchise stores located in eight Canadian provinces – Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Today's No Frills stores are much more like conventional supermarkets but continue to feature deep discount prices.

Items are no longer left in their cardboard shipping boxes but are arranged on store shelves and produce is conventionally displayed. While the original No Frills outlets stocked only the most basic products, today’s stores offer a wide array of items and brands that include Loblaw’s own private or ‘control label’ products. No Name, which is still heavily featured, has expanded from the original 16 items to more than 2,900 and the company’s premium "President's Choice" line is readily available on store shelves.

The range of services has also expanded with some outlets that offer fresh meat and fish counters. Frozen food sections, excluded from the original stores due to the cost of refrigeration, are now standard. Other features remain unchanged, though, with No Frills customers still required to pack their own groceries and bring their own shopping bags or pay 5 cents per bag.
